The Four Letter Word No Parent (or Anyone Else) Wants to Hear: LICE!

Lice removal is simpler than it seems. Promise!

Lice removal is simpler than it seems. Promise!

So you’re strumming along, having a grand time with your children finally old enough to be enrolled in school. Everything is dandy: there are playdates for everyone, visits to the class for publishing parties, positive progress reports from the teacher, fun field trips, birthday parties and smiles.

Ah, good times.

And…then….. you hear the record scratch – as the phone rings.

It’s the call.

You know, the one from the school with the directive: “Please come pick up your child right away because she has lice.”

The first time, you are mortified. You think, “But we’re clean. How could that happen to us?” And then after you conduct an online search and see the many macro photos of the little suckers, the next thought that follows is, “GROSS! Now we have to throw everything out and exterminate. Geez, this is worse than getting bedbugs!”

But it’s not.

Go ahead. Take a few moments to get past the gross factor of lice. Because, well, it is gross.

Then, after you review the facts (see below) and you jump into action,  you will find that lice removal is actually a simple process.

Basic Lice Facts
1.Lice is actually a much better deal than bedbugs.
2.Lice do not jump or fly. They get from one head to another by crawling.
3. Lice die within a few days of being out of contact with a human head.
4. Pets are not affected.
5. Putting all of your bedding and affected clothing in the dryer at the hottest setting for 30 minutes or longer OR putting everything in tied-off plastic bags for ten days is not as arduous as it may seem.
6. Applying the right hair treatment will kill the little beasts right away!
7. Applying a second and third application will guarantee the death and destruction of every single louse in your house!
8a. Life will go on, promise!
8b. Even after your kids get infested again.

Pump Mama’s Lice Recipes
If you find yourself with the task of lice removal, here are Pump Mama’s two homeopathic recipes that actually work! The ingredients can be found at most natural food and vitamin stores. It sure beats paying a lice removal service hundreds of dollars…

Pump Mama’s Lice Removal Recipe #1
1/4 c. Olive oil
1/8 c Coconut oil, melted
1-2 teaspoons 100% Tea Tree essential oil
1-2 teaspoons 100% Bergamot essential oil

Tools Needed
Hair dye applicator
Regular comb to divide hair into section
Towel or Paper Towels
Running water
Lice comb – the heavy duty one with the rounded-top handle and long steel teeth
Shower cap, good quality with a strong elastic band

Melt the coconut oil in the microwave if necessary. Mix it with the olive oil. Then add the essential oils. Mix thoroughly. Pour into a hair dye applicator bottle. Apply to a dry head of hair. Make sure scalp and crown are saturated. Cover with a good quality shower cap such as a Goody cap, and not the flimsy ones from your last hotel trip. Let it sit for six to eight hours, and even better if you sleep with it on overnight.

Comb out the hair thoroughly and section by section in the morning. Be sure to rinse and wipe down the lice comb after each pass-through. Then, wash either with strong dish soap twice before a last wash with your regular shampoo OR wash several times with your normal shampoo.

Apply for at least two nights in a row and then on the seventh or eighth day for two days in a row. This is to kill any lice that may hatch during the gestation period. Be sure to thoroughly comb through the hair before washing.
